Sodium Thiosulfate (Na2S2O3·5H2O) CAS # 7772-98-7
Sodium Thiosulfate is used in the maritime industry is for water treatment. Specifically, it is used as a dechlorinating agent to remove excess chlorine from water that has been treated with chlorine as a disinfectant.
It is used to dechlorinate tap water and within water treatment plants to treat settled backwash water prior to release into rivers.
Also, in gold mining, sodium thiosulfate is sometimes used as an alternative to cyanide for extracting gold from ores. This is considered a more environmentally friendly method, as it generates fewer toxic byproducts.
