Phosphorous Acid (H₃PO₃)   CAS #13598-36-2

Oil Field Applications Phosphorous Acid is a powerful reducing agent.

Demetallization of heavy oils with phosphorous and Phosphorous Acid can be used to make polyphosphinocarboxylic acid (PPCA) scale inhibitor on carbon nanotubes. PPCA is one of the most commonly adopted phosphino polymers in the oil industry for enhanced oilfield scale prevention.

A common phosphino polymer is used in the oil and gas industry. It can also be used to make phosphate esters, which are a common class of phosphorus-containing corrosion inhibitors used in the upstream oil and gas industry

An improved process for removing metals from heavy oils and other hydrocarbon feed streams that includes adding phosphorous acid to the hydrocarbon feed stream under suitable demetall. Phosphorous acid reacts with the metals contained in the hydrocarbon containing feed stream to form oil-insoluble compounds that can be removed from the hydrocarbon containing feed stream by any conventional method, such as filtration, centrifugation, or settling/decantation.

The use of chemical agents is effective for demetallization of heavy oil and residues as they do not attach to metal directly. This takes place due to the reaction of chemical agent with an organic part of organometallics. Phosphorous Acid is also a less toxic chemical applied to the environment.
